Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 28, 2026

TransAfrica Sounds is an independent music magazine covering Afrobeats, Amapiano and the wider sound of Africa. This page explains, in plain English, what information this site collects when you visit, why, who else might receive it, and what you can do about it.

The short version

  • You can read everything on this site without creating an account or telling us who you are.
  • Like almost every website, our server records basic technical details about each visit.
  • This site uses cookies, and some third parties (analytics providers, advertising partners and embedded players) may set their own.
  • Embedded videos, tracks and social posts come from other platforms, which have their own privacy rules.
  • We do not sell your personal data.
  • You can ask us what we hold about you and ask us to delete it.

Who “we” are

“We”, “us” and “this site” mean TransAfrica Sounds at transafricaradio.net. We are a small, independent publication. We decide what information this site collects and how it is used, which makes us responsible for it under most privacy laws.

Information collected automatically

Server logs

When your browser requests a page, the server that hosts this site keeps a standard log entry. That entry usually includes:

  • your IP address
  • the date and time of the request
  • the page or file requested
  • your browser type and operating system
  • the referring page, if your browser sends one

We use these logs to keep the site running, fix errors, understand load and protect against abuse such as spam, scraping and attacks. We do not use them to build profiles of individual readers.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. This site may use them in three ways:

Type What it does Who sets it
Essential Keeps the site working and secure, and remembers choices such as your cookie preferences This site
Analytics Counts visits and shows which pages and articles people read, so we know what’s useful This site or an analytics provider
Advertising Helps show ads, limit how often you see the same one, and measure whether ads work Advertising partners

Where the law requires your consent for non-essential cookies, we ask for it first, and you can change your mind at any time.

Analytics and advertising partners

This site may use third-party analytics services (for example, Google Analytics or a similar tool) to understand how readers find and use our coverage. These services typically collect information such as pages viewed, time on page, approximate location derived from your IP address, and device type.

This site may also show advertising served by third-party networks. Those partners may use cookies or similar identifiers to show ads based on your visit here and on other sites you’ve visited. Each partner handles that data under its own privacy policy, not ours.

We choose partners that let us limit data collection where possible, and we do not hand them anything beyond what their tools collect directly through your browser.

Embedded content from other sites

A music magazine runs on listening and watching, so our articles often include embedded content such as:

  • music videos and interviews from YouTube
  • tracks and playlists from Spotify, Apple Music, Audiomack or SoundCloud
  • posts from Instagram, X, TikTok and Facebook

Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other platform. That platform may set cookies, log your IP address, track how you interact with the embed, and link the activity to your account if you are logged in there. We have no control over this. If it concerns you, you can log out of those services before reading, use your browser’s privacy settings, or block third-party cookies.

Where a platform offers a privacy-friendlier embed option, we try to use it.

Tools that run in your browser

Some features on this site may be interactive. Where we say a tool runs in your browser, it does exactly that: what you type or select is processed on your own device and is not sent to us or stored on our server.

If you contact us

If you send us a message, for example a news tip, a correction or a question, we receive whatever you choose to include, such as your name, email address and the content of your message. We use it only to read and reply to you, and to keep a record of corrections or requests where needed. We don’t add you to any mailing list unless you ask to be added.

Why we use your information

We process information for these reasons:

  • To run the site and keep it secure. This is in our legitimate interest and yours.
  • To understand our audience through analytics, so we can cover the artists, scenes and stories readers care about. Where required, we rely on your consent.
  • To fund the site through advertising. Where required, we rely on your consent for personalised ads.
  • To respond to you when you get in touch.
  • To meet legal obligations if we are ever required to by law.

We do not sell your personal data

We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information. We share data only with the service providers that help run this site (such as hosting, analytics and advertising partners) and only to the extent their services require, or where the law compels us to.

How long we keep data

  • Server logs: kept for a limited period, normally no longer than 90 days, unless we need them longer to investigate a security problem.
  • Analytics data: kept according to the retention settings of the analytics service, which we set to the shortest period that still lets us see trends.
  • Messages you send us: kept only as long as needed to deal with your message and any follow-up, then deleted.
  • Cookies: each cookie has its own expiry date. You can delete them yourself at any time in your browser.

Third-party partners keep data according to their own policies.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, privacy laws such as the GDPR in the EU, the UK GDPR, South Africa’s POPIA, Nigeria’s Data Protection Act, Kenya’s Data Protection Act or US state laws like California’s may give you the right to:

  • ask whether we hold personal data about you, and get a copy
  • correct data that is wrong
  • ask us to delete your data
  • object to or restrict certain uses of it
  • withdraw consent you’ve given, such as for analytics or advertising cookies
  • complain to your local data protection authority

Even where no law requires it, we’ll treat a reasonable request the same way. Because we don’t ask readers to register, we often hold very little that identifies you directly. To help us find anything we do hold, tell us the dates you visited or the email address you used to contact us.

Your choices

You have practical control over most of this:

  • Cookie settings: use our cookie banner or settings where shown, or block and delete cookies in your browser.
  • Ad personalisation: most ad networks let you opt out of personalised ads through their own settings pages or industry opt-out tools.
  • Analytics: browser extensions and privacy-focused browsers can block analytics scripts.
  • Global Privacy Control: where the law treats this browser signal as a valid opt-out, we honour it.

Blocking cookies won’t stop you reading the site, though some embeds may not load.

Security

We take sensible steps to protect the information this site handles, including serving the site over an encrypted connection and limiting who can access server logs. No website can promise perfect security, but we work to keep risks low.

International visitors

Our readers come from across Africa and beyond, and the services that power this site may store data in other countries. Where data moves across borders, we rely on providers that use recognised safeguards for those transfers.

Children

This site is a general-interest music publication and is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the higher age set by law where you live). If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

As the site grows and we add or change tools, partners or features, we’ll update this page and change the “Last updated” date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll make it clear on the site.

Contact us

For any privacy question or request, including access or deletion, reach us through the contact details published on this site. We aim to reply promptly and within any time limit the law sets.
