CONFIRMED
Burna Boy walked onto football’s grandest stage and handed Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka the 2026 Sócrates Award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, according to Pulse Nigeria and Arise News. Several Nigerian outlets are calling it a historic first for a Nigerian artist, though that label rests on media framing rather than any official record.
What we know
Pulse Nigeria and Arise News, the latter with a Getty-style picture caption, both report that Burna Boy presented the 2026 Sócrates Award to Saka. The ceremony took place at the Palladium Theatre in London on October 26, 2026.
That night marked the 70th Ballon d’Or. It was also the first time the ceremony has been held in London, as confirmed by UEFA and the official Ballon d’Or website.
Before handing over the trophy, Burna Boy spoke about the football academy he set up in Nigeria a few years ago. Pulse Nigeria and Arise News report that he said he dreams of a footballer from that academy one day winning a Ballon d’Or. For a Grammy-winning artist, that is a long-game ambition, and a telling one.
The Sócrates Award itself is young. France Football established it in 2022 in collaboration with Peace and Sport to honour footballers’ social and humanitarian work. Sadio Mané was its first winner in 2022, and Jenni Hermoso took it in 2024. Saka now joins that list, with an Afrobeats heavyweight doing the honours.
What is rumored
The headline claim, that Burna Boy is the “first Nigerian artist” ever to present an award at the Ballon d’Or, comes from Nigerian outlets and aggregators: PM News, New National Star, allAfrica and DancehallMag, the latter surfaced through Ground News. We grade this C. These are mainstream outlets, but they largely repeat each other.
We found no statement from France Football or the Ballon d’Or organisers calling this a first, and no independent check of who presented at past ceremonies. The distinction matters: other Nigerian artists have reportedly performed at Ballon d’Or events, and performing is not the same as presenting. Until someone checks the record, treat “first” as a media framing, not a fact.
What we don’t know yet
Organisers have not said whether Burna Boy is the first Nigerian presenter in the ceremony’s history.
Adekunle Gold’s presence also needs care. Our brief describes him attending in black-tie style, but none of our graded sources confirm his 2026 appearance or what he wore. Nigerian outlets Legit.ng and Trickle Media reported that he attended the 2025 Ballon d’Or in Paris on September 22, 2025, which would make any 2026 appearance a return visit rather than a debut. Those outlets sit outside our approved source list, so we flag it rather than lean on it.
Burna Boy has not shared further details about the academy in the reporting we have, so its size, location and player pathway remain unclear.
What it means
Whatever the record books eventually say, the image lands. In 2021, Burna Boy and Wizkid released a track called “Ballon d’Or,” and DancehallMag, via Ground News, frames this appearance as a full-circle moment for that song. Hard to argue with the poetry: the man who rapped about football’s top prize ended up on stage at the ceremony itself.
It also says something about where Afrobeats now sits. Nigerian stars are no longer just the soundtrack in the stadium or the playlist in the dressing room. They are being handed the microphone at football’s most prestigious night.
The academy comment may be the part that lasts longest. A presenter slot is one evening. A pipeline from a Nigerian academy to a Ballon d’Or podium would be a generational story, and Burna Boy just told the world that is the goal.
